Industrial Engineering is concerned with the design, establishment and development of integrated systems which consist of men, material and machinery in its studies, it combines special knowledge and skills from mathematics, physics and social sciences with the principles and methods of analysis and design in engineering and so tries to determine and assess the results to be obtained from these systems".
The studies of Industrial Engineering can be divided into groups as follows:
1. Work Study: Examination of human performance in all aspects, method and time study 2. Plant Organization and Material Management: Design of the location of machinery and facilities in the plant, Design of the materials and products in production process with the lowest cost in order to ensure their flow in the easiest way and their lay-out, plant security, standardization of the instruments and equipment used, maintenance and repairs. 3. Production Planning and Control: Scheduling of production according to the amount of products to be produced and plant capacity, machine loading, raw materials and product inventory control and determination of the amount of economical orders. 4. Cost and Budget Control: Estimation of production costs, record order for the determination and control of the costs and prevention of the use of unnecessary materials and labor force. 5. Quality Control: Control of whether the products produced have the desired quality or not mostly with statistical methods. 6. Wage Management: Job evaluation and formation of wage systems.
However, today the functions of Industrial Engineering are classified in two levels. The level called Human Functions is concerned with the work environment in which human activities are carried out and includes the following elements: Production processes, materials, machinery and equipment, the methods related to the performance of work, and determination of flow of materials, facility design, data recording methods and reporting, maintenance methods and security processes. On the other hand, Planning and Control Functions include the following subjects: Production planning system, production methods, budgeting and economic solutions, salary and wage management, personnel management, employment and education of the employees and their being charged with a duty, planning material necessity, scheduling of production, reports of shipment, activities and case, Quality control system, distribution of resources and organizational design.
Industrial engineers perform activities that enable the managers to make decisions related to the fields of activities above. The companies in which industrial engineers work may be not only production companies but also service companies such as hospitals, hotels and banks.
